OntheBoards.tv: Movie Night in Seattle

Mon | Feb 27 | 7:30pm On the Boards will be hosting an intimate screening in our Studio Theater of The Method Gun, a fun and fast-paced performance from Austin’s The Rude Mechs that we filmed at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s TBA Festival in the fall. The Method Gun addresses the ecstasy and excesses of performing, the dangers of public intimacy, and the incompatibility of truth on stage and sanity in real life. Since 1995, Rude Mechs has created a mercurial slate of 23 theatrical productions that represent a genre-defying cocktail of big ideas, cheap laughs, and dizzying spectacle.

The Stranger once wished for the performance to come Seattle, so mark your calendars for the first time the show will be seen here!

Technology and the Arts on the Discussion Board

Check out how technology and new media has improved the learning and teaching of dance at the Lincoln Center Instute.

"When a dancer leaps, the leap is measured in relation to the space around it. How was this ever going to be conveyed on a screen of any size?..The answer seems to be: imaginative digital artists who love the arts, working with imaginative choreographers willing to lend their bodies to experimentation. This is the crux: technology that does not exploit, but lends its potential to the arts."

2 OntheBoards.tv Artists Recieve $50,000 USA Fellows

Morgan Thorson and Michelle Ellswsorth were both awarded USA Fellowships this year for outstanding dance artistry.  To be selected, the artist must have expert artistic skills in artistic education or training (formal or informal), a history of deriving income from those skills, a history of active engagement in creating artwork and presenting it to the public.  Read more about how the artists were chosen at the USA Fellows website and see the full list of USA Fellows.

Check out Heaven by Morgan Thorson, filmed in 2010, that integrated live music and vocal work into dance.  Heaven is a collaboration between rising choreographer Morgan Thorson and Alan SParhawk and Mimi Parker of the indie band Low.

During the first year of OntheBoards.tv, we invited performance artist Michelle Ellsworth to help set the tone for watching OtB.tv and provide the playfulness and intelligence that we believe is characteristic of our audiences. Check out all the videos she made for us here and look for her upcoming performance Phone Homer which will be available spring 2012.
